2013 Preakness Recap

Race Replay

Breakdown

1st: Oxbow

Anyone that follows the blog or listens to the podcast knows how much I think of the Lukas/Stevens team.  Oxbow had the worst of luck leading up to the Preakness, but EVERYTHING fell into place on Saturday.  He finally drew the perfect post, and he got the perfect trip.  As the half mile time went up all of his fans were thinking the same thing: “Is this really happening?”  Credit Oxbow for being good enough to take advantage, but also credit Gary Stevens for stealing the race and truly giving him a “Hall of Fame Ride.”  It’s on to Belmont now, as he’ll try to steal another one and win the back two legs of Triple Crown.

2nd: Itsmyluckyday

This had to be an incredibly vindicating race for trainer Ed Plesa.  The horse was being dismissed as being a “Gulfstream specialist” and “peaking to early.”  That certainly didn’t look to be the case in the Preakness, and now the horse looks like he could be a force again.  The long-term goal is the Haskell, and judging by his workout he had there before the Preakness it looks like he might be tough in that race.

3rd: Mylute

He just keeps getting better and better!  The question of whether he can actually win one of these big races is still in question, but you have to love his consistency.  The “can he win” question was being thrown around with Oxbow as well, so that’s a positive sign for Mylute.  Considering the incredibly slow pace he was closing into, this was actually his best race ever in my opinion. Black Eyed Susan (Grade 2) Preview

Black Eyed Susan Logo

Likely Winners

#3 Fiftyshadesofhay (KY) - Her company line is all you need to read…she’s had to bang heads all winter/spring with Beholder!  Beholder showed us her class once again in the Kentucky Oaks as she finished a solid second, and I expect Fiftyshadesofhay to flatter her in this one.  It was a smart move to hold her out of the Oaks, and you have to like that last workout she had leading up this race.  Also, you must note the jockey change…she’ll get the services of Joel Rosario for this one.

#7 Emollient (KY) - On paper this certainly looks like the horse to beat.  After running poorly in the Gulfstream Oaks, she returned one week later to totally dominate in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland.  Obviously if that race can be repeated then the others will be running for second, but she’s going to be at a terribly low price and there is enough there to make a case against her.  Maybe she loved the poly track last time out, and won’t like the Pimlico dirt.  An inconsistent race record also adds to the concern, so I don’t see the logic in taking her at odds less than Even money.

Exotic Plays

#1 Manuka Honey (KY) - It’s a two-horse race in my opinion here, but Manuka Honey seems likely to round out the tri.  Her last race at Oaklawn Park was a decent second to Rose to Gold who excels over the slop.  A dry track and a realistic spot are positive signs that she could run well.

#5 Walkwithapurpose (MD) - She was coming into the Gazelle Stakes last time out on a five race win streak, and was able to finish a decent third in that race only beaten seven lengths.  Little did we know that the second place finisher of that race, Princess of Sylmar, would come back to win the Kentucky Oaks.  So obviously that flatters Walkwithapurpose quite a bit, but she still has proving to do class wise.

Pace Scenario Setting Up Perfect for Orb in the Preakness

images

He’s already shown us that he doesn’t need a fast pace to win, but then again it won’t hurt things if he gets one. The late closing Orb got a perfect set up in the Kentucky Derby, and will most likely get another one in the Preakness.  Looking at his five victories in a row Orb has had a decent pace to run into twice while the other three were actually fairly slow.  Here is a breakdown of the likely horses in the race and what they like to do:

Speed: Oxbow, Titletown Five, Goldencents, Govenor Charlie

Stalkers: Departing, Itsmyluckyday

Closers: Will Take Charge, Orb, Mylute

I wouldn’t call any of the speed horses a true “need the lead” type horse, but we know a few things about each horse that suggests there will be a battle up front.  We know Oxbow can sit off the pace, but we also know that he has to be near the lead to have any shot at all.  His stable mate, Titletown Five, has shown no interest whatsoever to relax on the front end.  The jockey change will try to help change that, but you still look for him to be close.  Goldencetns is a horse they’ve tried to get to relax all year, and in the Santa Anita Derby he did a fairly decent job of it and ran a great race.  However, in that race he had only one target to rate behind.  This one obviously is setting up to be different.  Govenor Charlie has been on or near the lead in all three starts, and with the stretch out you can bet he’ll be there again.  Adding this all into the equation, I would expect an opening quarter of 23 or less, and I’d expect the half to be right at 46 which will definitely set it up for a closer.

The two you would consider stalkers are Itsmyluckyday and Departing, although Departing has shown he can sit back and make one run as well.  The other stalker, Itsmyluckyday, could actually heat things up even more if chooses to do so.  He was on the muscle in a recent work out at Monmouth Park, and has shown the ability to press things in a couple races this year.  I’m not suggesting he’ll want the lead, but he’s more likely to be running with the first group than the back half of the field.  His addition to the race just adds to the possibility of horses pressing each other on the front end.

So who will get the perfect set up in the Preakness?  In my mind that’s an easy answer: Orb, Mylute, Will Take Charge, and Departing.  Those four make up a pretty solid group, but it’s not hard to separate them.  Mylute has run two dynamic races in a row, but probably lacks the talent to actually win a race like this.  Will Take Charge was getting ready to run a super race in the Kentucky Derby before getting stopped, but he’s had trouble putting together back to back solid races.  So this leaves us with the always improving Departing and of course Orb.  From how we’ve analyzed this one it looks to be a two-horse race…a two horse race that Orb should win.
