2018 DERBY TRAIL TRACKER

The Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes is a pivotal race within Churchill Downs’ Road to The Kentucky Derby, as we’ve seen it produce solid horses such as Girvin, Gun Runner, and now Bravazo over the past three years. Even though the race is over, you’ll want to keep track of where these horses will run next.

The Derby Trail Tracker monitors and lists all the 2018 Kentucky Derby contenders and where they will be running next. Updated by Saratoga Slim, the races along the Derby Trail with Kentucky Derby points (and a couple of important preps without points) are listed, and the potential runners (with trainers’ last names in parentheses) are categorized as follows:

·         Probable: connections (trainer / owner) have said they are planning to run their horse in this race

·         Possible: connections (trainer / owner) have named this race as a possible place that their horse may run

·         Target: connections (trainer / owner) have said that their horse will target this race in the future

·         Speculative: based on quotes from connections and past trainer trends, these are educated guesses on where the horse  may run on the Derby Trail

PAST RISEN STAR STAKES WINNERS

Previously known as the Louisiana Derby Trial Stakes, in 1989 the race was renamed to honor locally owned Risen Star who won the race in 1988 and went on to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and be voted the 1988 Eclipse Award for American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse. The distance of the race was originally 1 mile, 40 yards but changed to the now 1 1/16 miles distance in 1991.
