Wearing blinkers for the first time proved the difference-maker for trainer Brad Cox’s Mandaloun, who took off in deep stretch to win the 2021 $400,000 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) at Fair Grounds.
Mandaloun’s win was his first at the stakes level and brings the 3-year-old Into Mischief colt’s record to 4-3-0-1 with $351,252 earned. He’ll likely head to the Louisiana Derby (G2) for his next start.

Previously known as the Louisiana Derby Trial Stakes, in 1989 the race was renamed to honor locally owned Risen Star who won the race in 1988 and went on to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and be voted the 1988 Eclipse Award for American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse. The distance of the race was originally 1 mile, 40 yards but changed in 1991 to 1 1/16 miles distance. In 2020, the distance of the race was extended to 1 1/8 miles.
