Trained by John Sadler and ridden by Joel Rosario, Combatant stalked wide behind the early leader Brown Storm. He inched forward in the far turn and emerged at the top of the stretch with a slim lead, then fought gamely to keep everyone at bay before winning the 1 1/4-mile event over the fast main track in a final time of 2:02.32.

The Santa Anita Handicap was first held in 1935 and instantly became a hit. Commonly referred to as “The Big Cap,” the race still stands today as one of the most important races of the year.
