The Somobombs: Gulfstream Park Picks for December 15th, 2021 with Free Late Pick 4!

There has been a lot said, mainly negative, about the Tapeda track that was added at Gulfstream over the summer. I’m in the minority and really enjoy it after the start to this meet. First, the field sizes are amazing, consistently getting 8-10 horses, and upping the payouts in the multi-race bets. Additionally, there has been a fairly solid bias towards horses from off the pace which makes it easy to chuck out some short priced speed. Over the long run, it’s going to help the turf course out as well. This is a 5 month meet at a track that runs year round. Taking the $12,500 claimers off the turf and running on the Tapeda is going to save the turf over the course of the meet.

Final note before we get to the picks, watch out for speed on the Tapeda running next out on the turf. With the Tapeda favoring closers and the turf front runners, there is a monster bias switch.

Race 6 – OC35k/SAL35k – 6F Dirt

Same song a different verse for #1 Concrete Glory who wired a field at this level and distance two back. Vasquez gets back aboard and is going to 100% send from the rail. There’s quite a bit of pace pressure in here so I’ll add the #5 Cyberviking who ran second to Concrete Glory last out, but didn’t break well in that one while Concrete Glory was loose. I’m including #3 Act of Valor as well who is first out for the Walder barn, adds Saez, and has the ability to stalk and pounce.

Race 7 – OC25k/N1X – 1 Mile Dirt

I’m going to fade the likely short priced favorite #3 Liam here who returns to the track for the first time in 14 months. He’ll try to go wire to wire and there is an abundance of speed in here. I’ll start with the #5 Magic Eclipse who will have plenty of pace to chase, has improved nicely the last two times out and has wins at Gulfstream and the distance. I’m going to forgive #1 Gump for the two sprints off the 13 month layoff and get back to the mid-2020 form second time going long. I’ll add #6 Hercules and #7 Create Again as well.

Race 8 – OC25k / N1X – 5F Turf

This race got tougher to project with the scratch of #2 Freewheeler. With less speed involved, I’m going to play both of the horses who could make the lead here, #7 Dr. Duke and #3 Like What I See. I expect #5 Cable Channel to improve 2nd off the long layoff here and I like the projected trip right behind the top two so let’s go 3 deep here.

Race 9 – $20k Claiming – 1 Mile 70 yards – Synth

On to that Tapeda! It’s nice to have multiple horses in here who already have efforts over the surface. I’ll single to close this out with a horse that has actually won over the surface, #6 Mr Matuschek who closed well to win last time out. He should get another nice set up and is 1st off the claim for Peter Walder. It’s a good progression spot as well, 3rd off the layoff late in the 4YO season and 2nd time over the surface.
