The competition at Churchill Downs includes a Grade I stakes race solely for three-year-old Thoroughbreds who should pass a distance of one and a quarter miles (2.0 km). Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg) and fillies 121 pounds (55 kg).The race is known in the United States as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Run for the Roses”, because of its approximate duration and the tradition of presenting roses to the winner. Some journalists call it “The Greatest Two Minutes In Sports”.
