Bast Headlines Juvenile Fillies

A field of nine fillies will battle in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park. A competitive field awaits bettors, with several solid entries all chasing glory over 1 1/16 miles. The event is set for race eight on Friday, November 1, and boasts a purse of $2,000,000.

Here’s a look at the full field:

#1 Donna Veloce – With just one race under her belt, this will be a big challenge from a class standpoint, but that one race was spectacular. She defeated her rivals by 9 1/4 lengths while being eased up in the stretch over this same course. This filly possesses massive talent.

#2 Two Sixty – She’ll make her first start away from Gulfstream Park after winning two of four appearances. Her effort last time out was easily the most impressive of her career as she took the field wire-to-wire for a 6 1/4-length win in the FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes. That was her first start around two turns.

#3 Perfect Alibi – With two graded stakes wins on her resume, she is one of the classiest horses in the race. Both of those wins – the Adirondack Stakes (G2) and the Spinaway Stakes (G1) – came at Saratoga. Most recently, she was second in the Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.

#4 British Idiom – Before her debut at Saratoga, many raved about this filly, and she definitely lived up to the hype, destroying her competition by 3 1/2 lengths. She once again dusted her rivals in the Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland by an eye-catching 6 1/2 lengths.

#5 Lazy Daisy – A big win at Churchill Downs in the Pocahontas Stakes (G2) last time out earned her a spot in this event. She has won two of three lifetime starts, with her only loss coming to Bast in the Del Mar Debutante (G1). The Pocahontas, her first start around two turns, was the best of her career.

#6 Bast – Trainer Bob Baffert brings this filly into the race with Grade 1 wins in each of her last two starts. After losing on debut, she was able to capture the Del Mar Debutante (G1) as a maiden by over 8 lengths. In her most recent start, her first around two turns, she won the Chandelier Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park by a neck.

#7 Wicked Whisper – This filly has been ultra-impressive thus far, winning both of her starts. After an impressive maiden special weight victory at Saratoga, the Steve Asmussen-trained filly won the Frizette Stakes (G1) in wire-to-wire fashion by 2 3/4 lengths. She has never trailed at any point and has never been asked for her best effort.

#8 K P Dreamin – She has lost to Bast twice in her career, though she narrowed the margin last time out in the Chandelier Stakes (G1), where she finished third. She also broke her maiden while going 1 mile, so she seems to like added distance.

#9 Comical – She developed early, winning a maiden at Santa Anita Park in May before shipping to Saratoga to win the Schuylerville Stakes (G3) by a neck. After a couple of poor performances, she rebounded last time out to finish second by a neck in the Chandelier Stakes (G1) over this track.

In recent years, this event has produced several longshots, making it one of the toughest for bettors to decipher. This is especially true at Santa Anita Park, where horses such as Take Charge Brandi and Ria Antonia have won the event. Tune in to see if a longshot can do it once again this year!
