Gulfstream Park February 6, 2020

Race 9: $25,000 Allowance Optional Claiming for 4-year-olds and upward going 5 furlongs on the turf

#2 King Snake finally got the job done when he made his way to Gulfstream Park. This is a good spot for him to face winners against for the first time. He will cut back in distance to 5 furlongs, going the distance he ran two starts back. #9 R Mercedes Boy has been good on the dirt but in his one turf start last summer, he wasn’t great. Georgina Baxter knows what she’s doing and can get any runner to improve.

Race: 10: Maiden Special Weight for 3-year-olds going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt

There’s only one horse in this race with previous experience that drew my attention. Based on #1 Courageously‘s purchase price back in 2019, I’m surprised they didn’t try this horse on the dirt. His last workout on the dirt was strong and looks like he might have a future on the main track. #10 Higher Quality is one of the Chad Brown runners that will take money, but it’s usually because he has great turf runners. Tiznow has been a good sire, but hasn’t been great since Irap was last seen in 2017 for Doug O’Neill.

Race 11: Ladies’ Turf Sprint Stakes for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 5 furlongs on the turf

#7 Lady’s Island was dominant in the Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) to cap off 2020. She’s done well going 5 furlongs in the past as well winning 4/8 career races. She hasn’t been the best on the turf, an obstacle she will have to overcome. #8 Hear My Prayer has shown the ability to sit off of the lead like she did in the Abundant Stakes earlier in the year. There’s a lot of speed in this race and it may set up perfectly for her.

Race 12: $6,250 Claiming for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 6 furlongs on the dirt

#4 Simple Story never recorded a fraction last time out after Edgard Zayas lost his irons right out of the gate. The race two starts back at the $10,000 level, she was second but did a nice job to hold on late. She looks like a strong candidate on the drop down in class. #10 Cookie Cove gets back to the dirt for the first time since October when she ran at the $12,500 level. She tends to finish second too many times, but this is the lowest level she’s even run at and will look to claim her second career win.
