Quick Suzy Exactly That In Queen Mary

ASCOT, BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND – Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Quick Suzy lived up to her name with a strong push in the final furlong to secure a 1 1/4-length victory over her fellow 2-year-old fillies in Wednesday’s Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Ascot Racecourse.

Quick Suzy’s win improved her record to 4-2-2-0 and avenged a last-out defeat by a length in a 6-furlong Group 3 sprint at Naas. Gary Carroll was aboard the Gavin Cromwell-trained daughter of Profitable, who was second on debut at Tiperrary before breaking her maiden at The Curragh next out.

American-trained runners Twilight Gleaming (the 2/1 stateside favorite) and Artos, who pressed the pace along opposing sides, flanked third-place finisher Cheerupsleepyjean, with Vertiginous just behind them in fifth.

“Quick Suzy – she’s that and everything else,” Carroll said. “It was very straightforward. I thought the American horse (Twilight Gleaming) would go a real good gallop and I’d be chasing, but I was actually close to her, and every step of the way, I was waiting and waiting. Inside the 2 (furlong marker), she got maybe 1/2 a length on me, but I chased her down and outbattled her to the line. She went quick last time over 6 on slow ground, as she has so much natural speed, but burnt off in the last 100 yards and ran out of petrol. She is a very good filly and really got to the line well today.”

Get Ahead, Illustrating, Orinoco River, Misty Ayr, Desert Dreamer, Nymphadora, Choux, Crazyland, Harmony Rose, Coup De Force, Jazzy Princess, Yet, Poppy Petal, Beautiful Sunshine, White Jasmine, and Mas Poder completed the order of finish. Eve Lodge scratched.

Quick Suzy returned $16.20 to win and $4 to place. Twilight Gleaming brought back $2.80 to place. Cheerupsleepyjean paid $24.80 to place. Artos paid $5.60 to place.
