Fantasy Stakes Contender Spotlight: Kansas Kis

HOT SPRINGS, AR – Perrine Time Thoroughbreds’ Kansas Kis will hope that stretching out in distance will help her overcome a pair of near-defeats when she enters Friday’s $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park.

Kansas Kis struggled to find the winner’s circle early in her career, finally breaking through in her fifth start while running 6 furlongs at Aqueduct. She returned to the same course and distance for her subsequent appearance, closing to finish second within 3/4 of a length against allowance/optional claiming foes, then got nailed at the wire in the one-turn, mile-long Busher Stakes, losing by just a nose.

Trainer Ray Handal has continued working Kansas Kis at Belmont Park leading up to the Fantasy as he tries to win his first graded stakes event. Jockey Florent Geroux will ride the daughter of Constitution when she tries running 1 1/16 miles and two turns for the first time Friday.

The Fantasy is a Kentucky Oaks (G1) prep race awarding a total of 170 points to the top four finishers. The winner will receive 100 points, with 40 going to second, 20 to third, and 10 to fourth.
