NEW CUMBERLAND, WV – After finishing second behind Irap in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby, AJ Foyt, Jr.’s Colonelsdarktemper confirmed Irap’s standing as the top 3-year-old in the country after he took Saturday’s Grade 3, $750,000 West Virginia Derby.
The son of Colonel John wired the field through fractions of :23.78, :47.85, 1:13.05, and 1:38.03 before crossing first in 1:50.68.

Under regular jockey Jon Court, Colonelsdarktemper was previously seen finishing second in the Indiana Derby and the Grade 3 Matt Winn. The victory improved his record to 8-3-2-1 and the winner’s share of $446,250 increased his career earnings to $653,050.
Game Over, Lookin At Lee, Patch, Silver Dust, Phat Man, McCormick, B Squared, Impressive Edge, and Heartwood completed the order of finish. Watch Me Whip was scratched.
Colonelsdarktemper returned $16 to win, $8 to place, and $5.40 to show. Game Over brought back $7.60 to place and $5.20 to show, while Lookin At Lee paid $4.20 to show.
