( Content Continues Below Ad ) Breaking well from post 5 as the 6/5 favorite under Irad Ortiz, Jr., Newspaperofrecord went straight to the front and outgunned Jakarta to sit solely on the lead. Riding comfortably while creating distance on the backstretch, Newspaperofrecord posted opening fractions of :22.39 and :45.38. Still holding a 2-length lead off of the far turn, Newspaperofrecord continued to run sharply in the stretch, handled confidently while pulling away to cross by 4 lengths. The Chad Brown trainee completed the 7-furlong sprint over the yielding outer turf course in a final time of 1:22.71. She’s (perfect) on the soft turf now, so I think she appreciates it.” Brown’s runners filled the top four finshing positions, as Regal Glory took second ahead of Significant Form and Viadera. Much farther back came Saratoga Treasure, Rose Flower, Jakarta, Eyeinthesky, Getmotherarose, and Jc’s Shooting Star to complete the order of finish. Slimey and Victim of Love were scratched. ( Content Continues Below Ad ) Newspaperofrecord’s win was her first since she won three straight as a juvenile, all over yielding turf courses, culminating in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). The 4-year-old Lope de Vega filly failed to win in 3 starts last year, but she improved her record to 7-4-2-0 with $850,750 earned with the victory. “She is back,” Brown said. “She ran brilliantly. I wanted to see her back in the winner’s circle off a brilliant effort, and she did that. She was up on the pace a little stronger than I had anticipated, but it was a great effort. I hope she comes out of it well.” Newspaperofrecord returned $4.70 to win, $3.40 to place, and $2.50 to show. Regal Glory brought back $5.40 to place and $3.50 to show, while Significant Form paid $3 to show.
