Race Recaps Tiz A Slam Takes G2 Nijinsky July 22, 2018 Race Recaps Tiz A Slam Takes G2 Nijinsky July 22, 2018 By: Curtis "Magic" Kalleward twitteremail Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article TORONTO, ON – Chiefswood Stable’s homebred Tiz a Slam shot to the front and never looked back, rolling wire to wire for his second straight score in Sunday’s Grade 2, $175,000 Nijinsky Stakes at Woodbine. Shooting out strongly from post 6 under Steven Bahen, Tiz a Slam took a length advantage and set unpressured splits of :25.85, :51.97, 1:17.19, and 1:42.23 for the opening mile. Rounding the far turn still with an uncontested lead, Bahen set Tiz a Slam down for the stretch drive and was able to just outlast Mekhtaal and Johnny Bear by a 1/2-length and a neck, consecutively, in a final time of 2:29.06 for the 1 1/2-mile turf event. Final Copy crossed in fourth a length ahead of Seeking Albert, while Bangkok took sixth over Pumpkin Rumble. The 8-5 favorite Vettori Kin never fired and completed the order of finish. Tiz a Slam’s win was his second straight following a triumph here three weeks ago in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes over the all-weather surface. The 4-year-old son of Tiznow increased his career bankroll to $655,990. “He’s a big horse, he’s taken a long time to mature,” Attfield said. “He’s still maturing, he’s learning. The last two races, he trained up to both of these races better than he’s trained up to any race in his career so far, so it doesn’t surprise me. We looked after him as well as we could as a 2-year-old, and he’s just getting bigger and stronger, and maybe he just keeps getting better, also.” Tiz a Slam returned $22.70 to win, $10.60 to place, and $7.50 to show. Mekhtaal brought back $6.60 to place and $4.60 to show, while Johnny Bear paid $4.60 to show.
