The $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) is shaping up to be an absolute heavyweight showdown.
Defending champion Forever Young returns looking to make history. Sovereignty, last year’s Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year, is ready to challenge him. Knightsbridge brings dangerous early speed, while Golden Tempo and Magnitude add even more firepower to an already loaded field.
Eight horses. One and a quarter miles. $7 million on the line.
But while the biggest names will attract plenty of attention at the betting windows, one historical trend suggests that picking the winner of the Classic might not be as straightforward as simply backing the favorite.
And it’s one of the 14 exclusive betting trends we’ve uncovered heading into the 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic Hasn’t Been Kind to Favorites
Here’s something worth considering before placing your Classic wagers.
Over the past 16 editions of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the post-time favorite has won just five times.
That’s a 31% win rate for favorites in one of horse racing’s most prestigious events.
For a race that regularly attracts the best dirt horses in the world, that’s an interesting statistic.
But here’s where things get even more intriguing.
Each of the last 13 Breeders’ Cup Classic winners has come from among the top four betting choices.
Think about that.
The favorite has been vulnerable, but the winner hasn’t typically been some impossible longshot either.
Instead, the Classic has consistently rewarded horses with proven ability, established Grade 1 credentials, and enough class to compete against the world’s best.
Last year was a perfect example.
Forever Young captured the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic at odds of 7-2, returning $9.00 for every $2 win wager.
He wasn’t the favorite, but he certainly wasn’t a surprise contender.
That result gave our Classic betting trend another HIT in 2025.
So what does that mean for this year’s race?
Forever Young vs. Sovereignty: Does History Favor Either Superstar?
Forever Young enters Saturday’s Classic as the 2-1 morning-line favorite, looking to become just the second horse in history to win the race twice.
Only Tiznow, who captured consecutive Classics in 2000 and 2001, has accomplished that feat.
The Japanese superstar has already proven he belongs among the world’s elite, and his dominating victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup showed he’s still operating at an exceptionally high level.
But repeating won’t be easy.
Sovereignty, the 5-2 second choice, presents a serious challenge after capturing the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 2025.
And that brings up another historical angle.
Three-year-olds have won 14 of the 42 Breeders’ Cup Classics contested through 2025, proving younger horses can compete with their more seasoned rivals.
However, only four horses have captured the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic in the same season:
- Sunday Silence (1989)
- Unbridled (1990)
- American Pharoah (2015)
- Authentic (2020)
That’s particularly interesting for Golden Tempo, the 2026 Kentucky Derby winner, who enters this year’s Classic at 5-1.
Can Golden Tempo join that exclusive club? Or will a seasoned older horse once again prove too tough?
History gives handicappers plenty to consider.
Could Knightsbridge or Magnitude Steal the Show?
While Forever Young and Sovereignty command the headlines, the 2026 Classic features other serious threats.
Knightsbridge, listed at 9-2 on the morning line, adds an intriguing element to the race.
The speedy Bill Mott trainee could have a major influence on how the Classic unfolds, especially with other horses possessing early speed in the field.
Magnitude, at 6-1, is another established older runner with the credentials to make an impact.
And that’s where handicapping becomes especially important.
If the Classic favorite is vulnerable, history suggests the winner is more likely to be another proven contender than a massive outsider.
But which horse offers the best value?
Does Knightsbridge get loose on the lead?
Will an aggressive early pace set things up perfectly for Forever Young or Sovereignty?
Could Magnitude deliver his best performance when it matters most?
These are the questions that could ultimately determine who cashes tickets on Championship Saturday.
