Woodbine Handicapping: Week 2

Opening weekend brought out a good crowd.  The early going seemed to favor an inside speed bias as horses were getting out to the rail and holding on for the win.  In my mind the best horses were simply winning.  Later in the day the public was betting down inside speed horses only to watch them give up the lead somewhere in the stretch.  Once again the best horses were getting the job done.  Don’t convince yourself there’s a bias.  Always treat the track normal until your 100% sure there is one.

Classic Ladedah runs in Race 2 on Saturday and the race sets up well for her.  I don’t see anyone going with her and she should have the lead to herself.  With an average pace or slower she shouldn’t have a problem getting to the wire ahead of the field.  A clean break from the gate is essential.

Race 8 brings us The Whimsical Stakes and it’s a tough one.  Goldstryke Glory, Skylander Girl , and Executive Allure look to be the class of the field.  However, they’re all speed horses and could easily wear each other down.  I’ll be looking for value here with Wild Catomine and Sweater Weather.  Wild Catomine should be sitting close to the pace and Sweater Weather poses a deep closing threat.  If the pace is hot up front which it should be, both Wild Catomine and Sweater Weather have a shot.

Sunday brings a good card as well and I do have a live first time starter I’m keen on.  I’ve been waiting for this horse for a while now.  It was supposed to run at the end of last season but was scratched at the gate and never did get to run a race.  If the horse is in the same form it was in the fall, it has a great shot at the win.
