Trenchtown Cat Wires Sanibel Island

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Few tried, but none succeeded, to stop trainer Rohan Crichton’s Trenchtown Cat from taking the field gate to wire in Saturday’s Cutler Bay Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Horse Racing Picks

Breaking well from post 5 at 5/1 odds under Irad Ortiz, Jr., Trenchtown Cat outhustled Seranitsa for the lead heading into the clubhouse turn, then set fractions of :24.94, :49.07, and 1:12.85 while that foe kept close watch to her outside. With her rider still motionless as she neared the top of the stretch, Trenchtown Cat dispatched of Seranitsa, then dug in deep late to keep a charging Vow to Recover at bay. A photo finish determined that the early pacesetter had indeed crossed first by a neck in a final time of 1:36.11 for the mile-long event over the firm turf course.

Seranitsa dropped off late but managed to hold third by a neck over Scat Mommy, with Positive Skew another 1/2-length back in fifth. The 7/5 favorite Belle Laura was never a factor and completed the order of finish.

Trenchtown Cat’s win came in her stakes debut and was her second straight win overall, following a maiden-breaking effort here on February 17 while going 5 furlongs. The 3-year-old daughter of Discreet Cat, purchased for $36,000 as a juvenile, increased her career earnings to $111,125 with a record of 3-2-1-0.

Trenchtown Cat returned $12.20 to win, $6.60 to place, and $5 to show. Vow to Recover brought back $7.40 to place and $4.80 to show, while Seranitsa paid $6.20 to show.
