Breaking from post 5 under Junior Alvarado as the 5/2 second choice, Startwithsilver settled well off of the early pace while Filibustin hustled up to take the lead and post opening fractions of :22.64 and :46.28. Still several lengths back as the field hit the top of the stretch, Alvarado tipped Startwithsilver out to the middle of the track, where she commenced a five-wide run to the front. Steadily gaining with every step, the Linda Rice trainee surpassed Yorkiepoo Princess in the shadow of the wire before crossing with a neck advantage. The New York-bred’s winning time was 1:11.19 for the 6-furlong sprint over the fast main track.

“I didn’t want to leave her with too much to do,” Alvarado said. “At the same time, she’s one of the only horses in the field that likes to run from behind, so I kind of had to sit early and hope for a fast pace. … I tried to save some ground, and when I put her in the clear, she started picking it up and giving me a nice run. She likes to run on the outside and I always have to time it with her, because sometimes when she gets to the lead, she gets a little lost. She did everything right today and we got there in time.”

After stalking the pace, Yorkiepoo Princess was unable to hold off the winner but still finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of defending champion Sounds Delicious. The 9/5 favorite Sower was unable to take advantage of her close early position and flattened out in the stretch run to finish fourth. After running in last for much of the race, Honor Way was unable to close quickly enough, missing fourth by a neck while outkicking only a spent Filibustin late to complete the order of finish.

Startwithsilver’s win was her first since an allowance score here last April and improved her overall record to 21-7-5-3, including a local line of 7-5-0-1. The 6-year-old daughter of Jump Start, who was sidelined from last June until early February, has now earned $412,059 for co-owners Lady Sheila Stable and Iris Smith Stable.

“The last race she ran, I had her at around 80% ready,” said Rice, who also trains Sower, Sounds Delicious, and Honor Way. “She ran decent, but I knew she was ready today. I thought we might have a wet track, which she loves running on. We didn’t get it, but I was really impressed with the way she ran on a dry track the way she did.”

Startwithsilver returned $7.70 to win, $3.80 to place, and $2.50 to show. Yorkiepoo Princess brought back $4.10 to place and $3.10 to show, while Sounds Delicious paid $3.30 to show.
