Free Pick: Arizona State (3-1) at UCLA (3-1) 10/2/21

The Sun Devils invade the Rose Bowl with three wins against crappy teams and a loss to BYU which is the only good team that they have played. They have had issues on offense and they better get those straightened out because the Bruins can score. UCLA is averaging 39 points per game and feature a balanced offense that has moved the ball in all of their games. They have played a much better schedule and have two good wins.

Scouting the Bruins:

Quarterback: Dorian Thompson-Robinson has thrown for 919 yards and 9 touchdowns with only 1 interception. He also is a threat to run the ball. He has the potential to control a game and the Devils have to contain him.

Running Backs: Zach Charbonnet (46 carries, 360 yards, and 7 TD’s) and Brittian Brown (47 carries, 263 yards, and 2 TD’s) have been a dynamic one-two punch and UCLA is very balanced on offense.

Wide Receivers: Kyle Phillips has caught 16 passes for 294 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tight end, Greg Dulcich is another threat with 7 catches for 177 yards.

Defense: The Bruins are giving up 409 total yards per game and that isn’t great. They have given up 274 yards per game through the air so that is a major concern. To be fair, they have faced some good competition, but they will need to play better in the weeks to come.

Scouting the Sun Devils:

Quarterback: Jayden Daniels is a dual threat quarterback. He has completed 73% of his passes for 808 yards and only 2 TD’s. He has also thrown 3 interceptions. On the ground, he is the leading rusher with 282 yards. He will give the Bruins some problems.

Running Backs: Rachaad White and Daniyel Ngata have combined for 49 yards and 9 touchdowns and when you add in Daniels’ totals you have an impressive run game.

Receivers: White is the leading receiver as he has caught 20 catches for 187 yards. Shelton Buckley is the leading wide receiver with 13 receptions for 186 yards.

Defense: On paper, the Sun Devil defense has been impressive yielding only 247 total yards per game. But, they have won three games against poor competition. BYU, the only good team they have faced, gained 361 yards on them. They have 12 sacks to their credit and have forced 6 turnovers. They are getting great play out of a trio of linebackers, Darien Butler, Kyle Soelle, and Merlin Robertson who have 73 tackles between them.

Both teams are 1-0 in the Pac-12 South so this is a huge game within the division. The winner will definitely have a leg up to be the South representative in the Pac-12 championship game. UCLA is a 3.5 point favorite.
