Ricky’s Rockets: Will Rogers Downs Picks for April 7, 2020

I still haven’t forgotten about this past Sunday’s Pick 5 sequence at Oaklawn Park. I had my $2 Pick 4 ticket and my 50¢ Pick 5 ticket ready to be cashed, but all that changed when Shashashakemeup who paid over $100 for a $2 win ticket, stormed home late! After letting out my frustration, I am back playing the Pick 5 sequence at Will Rogers Downs today (Races 2-6). Today’s sequence is pretty straightforward and I intend on hitting it! As a disclaimer, I’ve never bet Will Rogers Downs before but I’ve put in as much work into this sequence as I normally do for any other track across the country. I’ve only put my top selection for each race with the ticket I will play at the end.

Best of luck!

Race 2: Claiming $5,000 for 3-year-olds and upward going 6 furlongs on the dirt. Purse $8,250

#5 Consumer Confidence enters this spot after running a distant fourth at Oaklawn Park. Oaklawn is not only a better track, but he drops from an $8,000 tag to a $5,000 tag. Ty Kennedy is one of the best jockeys here at Will Rodgers and it speaks volumes that he chose to ride this horse. He was purchased for $210,000 as a yearling and is by Quality Road. He should be very tough to beat regardless of his recent efforts.

Race 3: Claiming $7,500 for 3-year-olds and upward going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt. Purse $8,250

In his first start off the long layoff, #2 Owen the Great showed some impressive early speed. He was a step slow out of the gate and was hustled to the front by Benny Landeros. The fractions posted don’t represent how hard Owen the Great had to work to establish the lead in the backstretch. At 19/1 he ran a winning race and an improvement at the same level can be expected in this start.

Race 4: Maiden Special Weight for Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds and upward going 6 furlongs on the dirt. Purse $23,760

#3 November Mike made his debut at Churchill Downs on September 14, 2019. That race included South Bend, Answer In and Bank, all who have had success since that race. The class he has held in the past outshines this group by a ton and his best race might not be necessary here. Scott Young and Lane Luzzi should see this 3-year-old by Street Boss break his maiden status in his seventh career race.

Race 5: Allowance for 3-year-olds and upward going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt. Purse $22,000

#1 Miltontown outkicked fellow runner Taruca here at Will Rogers on March 17. He broke well out of the gate and once he got the lead, the race was over. This race should come down to these two again as both are better than the rest of this field. Both need to be included in the Pick 5 sequence but Miltontown is just a little bit better and will look for his second win in a row.

Race 6: Maiden Claiming $15,000 for 3-year-olds and upward going 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt. Purse $11,550

#2 Go for Jim was entered in a turf sprint last time at Sam Houston Park. He didn’t run poorly but clearly showed the dirt is his preferred surface. Prior to this start, he’s run at Oaklawn Park, Churchill Downs, and Keeneland. None of those performances at those tracks have blown anyone away, but he has shown early speed in the past. His last workout in the morning went 4 furlongs in :47.40. That time is very impressive and that could be an indication he’s in for a big performance today.
