Ricky’s Rockets 🚀: Saratoga Picks for September 1, 2021

Ricky’s Rockets🚀 is back with a twist on afternoon. We’ve officially hit a new month, which means a couple of different things. It’s unfortunately the last week at Saratoga, but with Labor Day on the horizon, we will get 6 days of racing from the SPA! There aren’t many days left, so let’s kick off closing week with a bang!

Also included below: my 10-race preview of Saratoga

Saratoga September 2, 2021

Race 7: Allowance for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 5 1/2 furlongs on the Melon turf

#1 Jill’s a Hot Mess went gate-to-wire in her last race at the Starter Allowance level for Linda Rice. This is a step up in class, but not as big as one might think. #6 Tis a Pity proved she’s much better going shorter compared to going longer. She has the chance to be much better the older she gets as well.

Race 8: Allowance for 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on the dirt

#3 Runnin’ Ray has won two races in a row for Joe Sharp, including a win over a muddy track here at Saratoga. This will be the toughest level he’s ever faced, but he seems to be in his best form as well. #4 Texas Swing makes his first start since April for Todd Pletcher. This is only his second start of the year as well.

Race 9: With Anticipation Stakes (G3) for 2-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles (8 1/2 furlongs) on the inner turf

#1 Limited Liability won on debut for Shug McGaughey here at Saratoga going 8 1/2 furlongs on the turf. Shug usually doesn’t win first time out, so that debut has to be taken extremely seriously. #4 Portfolio Company also won on debut, but it came back in the middle of July. Chad Brown has been waiting for this race for him.

Race 10: Maiden Special Weight for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles (8 1/2 furlongs) on the Melon turf

#10 La Victoria was scheduled to run on the turf last time out, but Todd Pletcher chose to keep her on the dirt. Let’s see how she runs when she actually gets on the grass for the first time. #12 Lady Thornhill took a big step forward when she got to the grass. That could be a sign she’s not only getting better, but this is her preferred surface as well.
