Ricky’s Rockets 🚀: Keeneland Picks for October 20, 2021

The countdown to the Breeders’ Cup rolls on! Ricky’s Rockets 🚀 returns to Keeneland on Wednesday afternoon, as we approach the two-week mark to the biggest event in the sport. Keeneland provides us with an 8-race card and plenty of betting opportunities as well on Wednesday. There aren’t any stakes races on the card, but many of the races have horses that can get to that level with a big performance!

Also included below: my 8-race preview of Keeneland!

Race 5: Maiden Special Weight for 2-year-olds going 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt

#2 Fan the Fire was last seen in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile on September 6 at Kentucky Downs as a maiden. He gets back to a similar spot to what he saw at Saratoga going 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt at Saratoga. #10 Pine Valley was absolutely horrible on debut, but there is some upside here. Steve Asmussen has struggled this meet, but this slump won’t last forever.

Race 6: Allowance for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles (8 1/2 furlongs) on the turf

#4 Dominga also gets back to a group where she can run and compete. The last time she won a race, it was against Allowance Optional Claiming runners at Churchill Downs in June. #6 I’llhandalthecash will look to control things on the front end, with her early gate speed. That’s where she’s the most comfortable, and where she can really make an impact in a small field.

Race 7: $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 7 furlongs on the dirt

#1 Tipsy Gal comes into this one looking for her first win since March when she ran at the Fair Grounds. That slo happens to be the last time Brian Hernandez Jr. was aboard. #2 Movie Moxy returns to her best track, where she’s finished in the money in all of her races. She finished third at this level in April, by close to 14 lengths.

Race 8: Maiden Special Weight for 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles (8 1/2 furlongs) on the turf

#1 Already Charming broke sharply out of the late in her last start, but she lost a ton of energy being forced into the gate. She needs to get back to her debut, where she almost won at Ellis Park in July. #4 Gimme Mo Baby was storming home late at this level at close to 62/1 on debut. She’s certainly not going to be those odds this time around, as bettors have seen what she can do on the track.
