Ricky’s Rockets ?: Kentucky Downs Picks for September 16, 2020

We have been treated to some fantastic turf racing here at Kentucky Downs. However, all good things must come to an end, as Wednesday afternoon is the final day of the meet. There are 10 races on the card, highlighted by the Franklin-Simpson Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Best of luck!

Race 7: Starter Allowance for 3-year-olds and upward going 1 mile and 70 yards on the turf

#7 Muggsamatic never really got the chance to run the leaders down, after such slow fractions in the United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park. This race looks like there will be a more honest pace on paper as he looks to win his debut at Kentucky Dows.

Race 8: Starter Allowance for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 mile 70 yards on the turf

#3 Sugar Fix tried stakes competition for the first time in the Lake George (G3), where she finished fifth. Sugar Fix has won 6/10 races in 2020, albeit against weaker competition. #9 Aife finished second in her only race over this course at this level last year. She is one of the main runners to beat in this spot.

Race 9: Franklin-Simpson Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf

#1 Turned Aside tries to continue his success outside of New York for the first time. He looked great in the Quick Call Stakes (G3) and should be on the lead from the rail as he tries this distance for the first time in his career. #3 Maven broke awkwardly at the start and compromised his chances of winning the Mahony Stakes at Saratoga on August 25. Hopefully he can break better, and if he does, watch out. Wesley Ward and Irad Ortiz Jr. have combined to win at 27% over the last 365 days together as a powerful jockey/trainer duo.

Race 10: Starter Allowance for 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/2 miles (12 furlongs) on the turf

#7 Peekacho has been fantastic at this distance finishing either first or second in all three races going 12 furlongs. He also won his only race here last year, and is poised to stay undefeated over this turf course. #9 Marv’s Magic ran just last week here at Kentucky Downs. He will look to run better after failing to make much of an impact last time out.
