Ricky’s Rockets ?: Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita Picks for January 24, 2020

Ricky’s Rockets? had an amazing day on Saturday afternoon on Pegasus Day. It was one of the more memorable days that I could remember, and one of those days we will look back on for a long time. We were able to bring home two Pick 4’s ($724.35, $613.20) a Pick 5 ($1,106.35) and the Rainbow 6 ($2,149.12) Luckily for us, there’s one more day of racing before the weekend commences.

Also included below: my 9-race preview of Oaklawn Park and 11-race preview of Gulfstream Park!

Best of luck!

Santa Anita January 24, 2020

Race 5: $20,000 Maiden Claiming for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt

#2 It’s a Riddle is 0/14 in her career and probably doesn’t deserve any more chances after getting so many. She’s only been a favorite on a handful of occasions so it’s important we recognize that as well. There’s a good chance she will be the third betting choice here. #4 Wicks and Chappies ran one of her best races going 6 furlongs last time out at the $20,000 Maiden Claiming level. She will try to break her maiden on the front end for John Sadler.

Race 6: Clocker’s Corner Stakes for 4-year-olds and upward going 6 furlongs on the turf

#7 Strike Me Down is looking for his first win since 2019 when he won at Laurel. He had been going longer in his career, so this race will be very interesting. His ability to be on the front end would suggest he won’t have an issue sprinting for the first time. #8 Gregorian Chant will also go 6 furlongs for the first time in his career. He’s a very similar horse to Strike Me Down so how they break out of the gate will help determine how this race shakes out between these two.

Race 7: $12,500-$10,500 Claiming for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 7 furlongs on the dirt

#1 Madame Barbarian will be making her 76th career start which is incredible in itself. She has the ability to go over the $400,000 career purse earnings here and she’s one of the coolest mares around. #6 Eternal Endeavour has finished in the money in both of her races going this distance. She’s not quite a sprinter but doesn’t really want to go longer either. This is the perfect distance for her.

Race 8: Starter Allowance for 4-year-olds and upward going 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf

#4 Caerulean was looking for a three-race win streak coming into his final race in 2020. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to get the job done, but he’s one of the main contenders as he looks to bounce back here. #9 Coast of Roan will try sprinting on the turf for the first time in his career. The only other time he sprinted was on the dirt in his debut at Los Alamitos in 2019. Let’s see if his come from behind style plays out at this distance, or will he run out of time?
