Ricky’s Rockets ?: Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn Park Picks for February 11, 2020

At this time last week, Ricky’s Rockets ? was on the way to sweeping the card at Gulfstream! We’ve started off strong in February with one of the best weekends we’ve ever had, however, it’s important we don’t rest on our laurels, and continue to get better and improve. We have a great weekend ahead of us as well, so let’s build our bankrolls on a great Thursday afternoon.

Also included below: my 10-race preview of Gulfstream Park and 9-race preview at Oaklawn Park.

Best of luck!

Gulfstream Park February 11, 2020

Race 7: $35,000 Starter Optional Claiming for 3-year-old fillies going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the turf

#5 Por Que No took that step up we were looking for from a betting perspective, in her second career start. She showed speed and went gate-to-wire going this distance. I don’t think this level is over her head as she faces winners for the first time. #9 Coffee Buzz Buzz finished second this level last time out at a similar level with Edgard Zayas aboard. She fits in perfectly with the rest of this field.

Race 8: $50,000 Starter Optional Claiming for 3-year-olds going 6 furlongs on the dirt

#3 Lauda Speed started his career on the dirt over the summer in 2020. After three starts to his career, the connections decided to have him run on the grass, including the Dania Beach Stakes. He gets back to the dirt on the surface where he broke his maiden, back in August. #4 Worlds On High took the lead down the stretch last time out, but couldn’t hold off Drain the Clock who was strong at the end. Worlds On High takes a slight drop in class, based on the conditions in his last race.

Race 9: $35,000 Allowance Optional Claiming for 4-year-olds and upward going 1 1/2 miles (12 furlongs) on the turf

#6 Focus Group has proven he can go this long based on his 2 mile race in the Allen Jerkins Stakes last time out. He’s finished in the money in 4/6 races at this distance, and can run for days. #11 Pillar Mountain last ran this distance in the Point of Entry Stakes in 2019 at Belmont Park. This will be a challenging distance for him, as he enters this race with a $35,000 price tag.

Race 10: $25,000-$20,000 Maiden Claiming for 3-year-olds going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the turf

#1 Lease looked strong when he dropped down to the $25,000 level for Bill Mott to kick off his 2021 campaign. He didn’t belong at the Maiden Special Weight level based on his two races at Saratoga. Bill Mott is winning at 26% at the meet, and he will have a great chance to improve on those stats here. #7 Superstition should’ve never moved up in class last time out. He wasn’t terrible in his debut at the $35,000 level, and should’ve stayed at that level. Irad Ortiz Jr. takes over for Leonel Reyes, which is a massive rider upgrade.
