Ricky’s Rockets ?: Fair Grounds and Gulfstream Park Picks for January 14, 2021

Ricky’s Rockets? soared last week and we don’t plan on stopping this week. With MLK day around the corner, the slate is light on Thursday afternoon. However, we still have great action from the Fair Grounds and Gulfstream Park on Thursday afternoon.

Also included below: my 9-race preview of the Fair Grounds.

Best of luck!

Gulfstream Park January 14, 2021

Race 7: $12,500 Allowance Optional Claiming for Florida-bred fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt

#2 Miss Peppina will go back to running longer distances after sprinting last time out. He was in a stakes race over the summer at Belmont, so this is quite a long way to fall. I like her on paper, but she’s extremely vulnerable. #4 Tiz Enough took the same test last time out and finished third and was competitive throughout. She gets a massive rider upgrade from Hector Berrios to Tyler Gaffalione.

Race 8: Starter Allowance for 4-year-olds and upward going 5 furlongs on the turf

#5 Fully Loaded is a true turf sprinter but will take a drop in class here. He drops from the $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming level to a Starter Allowance race that doesn’t pose too many issues on paper. #7 Krsto Skye has plenty of turf experience, but hasn’t run on the turf since last July. He has finished in the money in 35/61 starts so no matter where he shows up, he runs a quality race no matter the circumstances.

Race 9: $35,000 Allowance Optional Claiming for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 1 3/8 miles (11 furlongs) on the turf

#6 Whatdoesasharksay has only finished first one in her 11 races, but some of her better races came at 11 furlongs. It’s not easy to find races going this distance, but when they do, Whatdoesasharksay is one to look out for. #8 Crystalle only ran three times in 2020, and only one of those races are similar to this one. She is isn’t the same she was in 2019 or 2020, but looks strong on paper.

Race 10: $12,500-$10,000 Claiming for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and upward going 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt

#2 Domineer has turned on a switch recently including a second and a first place finish in her last two starts. She has shown speed in her last two races, and has shown the ability to go gate-to-wire when asked to. #6 Sense a Million outran her 11/1 odds against open Claiming competition last time out. Now in a restricted event, she looks like a strong candidate to begin her 2021 campaign with a victory.
