Belmont Park June 17, 2021

Race 6: Maiden Special Weight for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs) on the inner turf

#3 Miss Bonnie T has finished a length away from the leaders in four straight races dating back to last December. Jose Lezcano takes over John Velazquez who has simply been one of the best riders on the turf at Belmont over the past couple of weeks. #8 Black Sand ran her best race my a large margin last time out, showing everyone she doesn’t mind traveling 10 furlongs. Given her European pedigree, the longer the race, the more likely she is to perform at a high level.

Race 7: $45,000 Allowance Optional Claiming for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 7 furlongs on the dirt

#4 Maiden Beauty was on a two race win streak couple into her last race. I’m to throw that one out since it was over a sloppy track against open competition. #5 Fair Regis hasn’t been at Belmont Park in a long time, but she has finished in the top two spots in 9/14 races over this track.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles (8 1/2 furlongs) on the widener turf

#1 Candy Flower hasn’t been able to win a race against Allowance runners yet, but her last two races show she’s been right there. Breaking from the rail shouldn’t be an issue given her breathtaking speed from the gate. #2 Apurate was horrible last time out, but that looks to be a one off. Her morning-line odds should be good enough to provide some value.

Race 9: $40,000 Maiden Claiming for New York-bred 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles (8 1/2 furlongs) on the inner turf

#6 Brennan’s War could be great, could be horrible, or something in between. The majority of these runners are in the horrible category, and the unknown makes him very interesting. #10 Straight Skinny took a while to get going in his last race, but once he did, he was closing with a kick. A slightly better start this time around, could see him end up with a much better result.
