Belmont Park May 7, 2021

Race 6: $20,000 Maiden Claiming for 3-year-olds and upward going 6 furlongs on the dirt

#1 Shadow Boat drops in for a tag for the first time in his career, after finishing off of the board in all of his starts. This move was inevitable, but I didn’t think the drop would be quite so precipitous. Manny Franco was aboard last year when he ran against Maiden Special Weight competition at Belmont Park. #2 Sixteen Tons was closing ground with every step last time out on the turf. Linda Rice gets him back to the main track here, when he looks to break his maiden in his 7th career start.

Race 7: Starter Allowance for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the widener turf

#7 Ocean Air faces winners for the first time in her career, after she dropped in for a tag. She was an even-money favorite last time out, but she was good enough to close late when it mattered most. #10 Pie Killer broke her maiden over the main track at the Fair Grounds. Michael Stidham has struggled with his barn at the meet, with all nine runners finishing outside of the top three.

Race 8: Allowance for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs) on the inner turf

#2 La Dragontea is a complete unknown, but Christophe Clement tends to be very good in these sorts of situations. Joel Rosario also excels on the turf, so this looks like a match made in heaven. #5 Caen Na Coille ran once here in the United States, in a so-so effort. Junior Alvarado takes over for Trevor McCarthy, who got her to finish fourth at this class last time out.

Race 9: $40,000 Maiden Claiming for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upward going 6 furlongs on the widener turf

#3 Quantitativebreezin debuted at this level last June, and to this day, that was easily her best race. She makes her 2021 debut for Brad Cox, in a very sensible position. #10 Esotica has shown speed against much better runners on the dirt. It’s very reasonable to believe Irad Ortiz Jr. will be able to get even more speed out of her on the turf.
