Pacific Gale Bombs Inside Information

Breaking from post 6 under John Velazquez, Pacific Gale sat off the pace and out in the clear while the 2/1 favorite Cinnabunny dueled inside of Thissmytime through opening fractions of :22.45 and :45.13.

Thissmytime took over at the top of the stretch as Cinnabunny threw in the towel and quit, but Velazquez had Pacific Gale flying home with a furious flurry.

The John Kimmel trainee crossed 2 3/4 lengths much the best while completing the 7-furlong fast dirt sprint in 1:22.60 under a hand ride.

“Finally!” Velazquez said. “I always try to keep her covered up and make one run with her. Today was the day. I kept her covered up, and when we passed the 1/4 pole and got to the 3/16 pole, I got out and she responded right away. It set up the way we wanted to.”

Thissmytime held onto second by 1 length over Piedi Bianchi, while Cinnabunny faded to fourth, a head in front of Dream Marie.

Bronx BeautySally’s Curlin, and Sound Machine completed the order of finish.

Pacific Gale’s win was her first since defeating optional claimers at Belmont Park 27 months ago and improved her overall record to 28-4-6-5. The 6-year-old Flat Out mare has now earned $510,710.

“She was kind of earmarked to (breed) to Not This Time, and I told (the owner) this filly is training better than I’ve ever seen her train up at Palm Meadows,” Kimmel said. “She’s dappled out and she’s just come to herself and I was just very optimistic about her today. Even though she’s 0-for the last two years, just to see her fire like you’ve never seen her fire was just a tremendous accomplishment for a filly that’s been a bridesmaid against some top quality horses. To see her get her due diligence here today is just really, really special.”

Pacific Gale returned $34.20 to win, $10 to place, and $6.60 to show. Thissmytime brought back $4.20 to place and $3.20 to show, while Piedi Bianchi paid $5.40 to show.
