6. Make sure the horse is not coming into this race off a long layoff.
The final check is to make sure that the horse is not coming off of a long break.  A horse that is returning to the races off of a layoff of 60 days or more may not be ready.  This will be a judgement call on your part.  Higher class horses with good trainers and steady workout patterns can return after long layoffs and run as well as they did before the break.  Cheaper horses that are coming back to the races after a long break and may be dropping in class should always be viewed with some skepticism.

This horse ran on Monday at Parx. #2 Rangitoto used his pace advantage well and went wire-to-wire paying $9.80 to win.

This is a great angle, and with a bit of practice it should not take you longer than 30 seconds to see if there is a qualifying horse using BETMIX.  This is one of the first things we look for in any race we’re handicapping.
