ARCADIA, CA – Trainer Doug O’Neill’s Hot Rod Charlie, game runner-up to favored Essential Quality in the Belmont Stakes (G1) last Saturday, enjoyed his first day back on the track this morning at his home base of Santa Anita.
âHe jogged a mile and 1/2 and looked fantastic,â OâNeill said. âHe was happy and full of energy.â
The hard-hitting son of Oxbow arrived Wednesday night from the East Coast; now, Team OâNeill is pondering the future.
âDeciding on his next race is a group effort,â OâNeill said. âNo one wants to say much right now . . . itâs the old clichĂŠ, âWeâll see where Charlie takes us,â and we really canât know that until we see how he is on the track, eating, and all that stuff, so in a couple weeks, weâll have a better idea.
âThe Pacific Classic at Del Mar is a possibility (August 21), the Haskell at Monmouth is possible (July 17), as is the Pennsylvania Derby (September 25 at Parx),” all of which are Grade 1 dirt routes. “There are tons of possibilities and options.â
