NYRA Preview: Belmont Park 10/12

Belmont Park is heating up as the Floral Park Stakes and the Sands Point Stakes are back! Just as recently as 2017, we witness Uni win the Sands Point for the Chad Brown barn. Will Chad Brown win it again with Olendon or New and Improved, or will another runner make their mark? We have two maiden special weight (MSW) races that intend to bring a lot of excitement as the first race is the beginning of the Grand Slam (Races 6-9) and the late Pick 5 (Races 6-10).

Race 6: $62,000 MSW for New-York-bred 2-year-olds going 6 furlongs on the inner turf

This is a very competitive group of 2-year-olds that will look to break their maiden status before the end of the meet. George Weaver has a 2-year-old colt that showed a lot of promise in his debut back on September 20. #7 Boom Boom Kaboom broke away very sharply in that turf sprint. He maintained that position throughout but failed to fire as Eric Cancel took him three-wide to take dead aim in the stretch. He has the most talent in this field by a wide margin and should not have a problem taking down this field which is considerably weaker than he faced in his debut.

Ricky’s Picks: 7-8-5-1

Race 8: $75,000 MSW for 2-year-old maidens going 7 furlongs on the dirt

Bill Mott originally had #6 Hemlock scheduled to run on the turf at Saratoga on July 24, but the connections must be happy he was introduced to the dirt. In his debut, he was a heavy favorite but disappointed as Another Miracle went on to win that race and run in the Skidmore Stakes and the Grade III Futurity last week at Belmont. In Hemlock’s next start he did everything Junior Alvarado asked of him but got nailed at the wire. Today he gets an extra 1/2 furlong which should give him the opportunity to stalk the leaders.

Ricky’s Picks: 6-1-3-5
