NYRA Preview: Aqueduct 1/18

As thoroughbred racing in 2020 picks up across the country, the same could be said for racing at the Big A. Today’s featured races include: the Franklin Square for 3-year-old fillies, and the Grade III Toboggan for 4-year-olds and upward. The Toboggan hails it’s name due to the nature of the race run on the downhill Eclipse course at Morris Park Racecourse in the Bronx, prior to 1896. Along with these two featured races, there is one maiden special weight (MSW) race for 3-year-olds on the dirt that I’ve previewed.

Race 3: $68,000 MSW for 3-year-old maidens going 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt

Steve Asmussen has waited a long time to unleash his 3-year-old colt by Street Sense in #7 The Kohen. He was purchased for $270,000 as a yearling, at the Keeneland September sale in 2018. Asmussen is known to not run his horses at max effort in the mornings, and the Kohen still posted very quick times. Right to his inside is Quixotic who showed early speed for Jonathan Thomas. Look for the Kohen to follow him every step of the way and try to track him down late.
