NYRA Preview: Aqueduct 1/12

Racing commences on this unseasonably warm Sunday with the fourth running of the Rego Park Stakes for New-York-bred 3-year-olds going 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt. There is also two maiden special weight (MSW) races today that I’ve previewed to end the weekend on a high note.

Race 1: $68,000 MSW for 3-year-old fillies going 7 furlongs on the dirt

Bill Mott might have a special filly with #5 Common Courtesy. She has recently ramped up her morning works and on January 8, she went four furlongs in :48.23. That time is comparable to some of the better horses on the NYRA circuit, let alone at this class. This filly has the potential to do big things in 2020 and today is the first day in doing that.

Race 4: $60,000 MSW for New-York-bred 3-year-old fillies going 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt

#1 Micromillion makes her third start for Todd Pletcher out of the Repole Stable. She has not run since May 9 of last year but looked good doing so. Todd Pletcher has won at 29% with horses coming off a six-month layoff against much better competition. This might be a classic case of a horse needing a start to get her going again but even if that’s the case, she has the talent to beat this field after the long layoff.
