LOUISVILLE, KY – Lecomte Stakes (G3) champion Midnight Bourbon and Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Soup and Sandwich stretched their legs at Churchill Downs Sunday as they work toward May 1’s Kentucky Derby (G1).
Midnight Bourbon covered 5 furlongs in 1:00.40 and Soup and Sandwich completed 4 furlongs in :48.80 with jockey Declan Carroll in the saddle.
“This was the first time Iāve seen him work because heās been in Florida,ā said Soup and Sandwich trainer Mark Casseās assistant David Carroll, Declan’s father. āHe has a big stride on him and really got over the track well. I told Declan to just let him do his thing and gallop out nicely. I think heās starting to find his stride. The Derby will be the first time heāll be led over from his own stall and I think itāll benefit him getting experience over the track.”
The Todd Squad
Trainer Todd Pletcher, whose expansive stable could saddle as many as four in the Derby, shipped in Florida Derby winner Known Agenda and Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) runner-up Sainthood Sunday. Traveling with them was Malathaat, Pletcher’s undefeated Kentucky Oaks (G1) hopeful who was last seen winning the Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.
Pletcher’s New York-based duo Bourbonic and Dynamic One – 1-2 finishers of the Wood Memorial (G2) – were expected to arrive early Monday.
