Race Recaps Wonder Gadot Gallantly Wires G3 Mazarine October 7, 2017 Race Recaps Wonder Gadot Gallantly Wires G3 Mazarine October 7, 2017 By: Curtis "Magic" Kalleward twitteremail Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article TORONTO, ON – Gary Barber’s Wonder Gadot made mincemeat of her three competitors, easily wiring Saturday’s Grade 3, $125,000 Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine. Breaking sharply from the second post under Patrick Husbands, Wonder Gadot immediately took the lead and set splits of :24.87, :49.86, and 1:13.93 while briefly being challenged by Shamrock Rose down the backstretch. Off the turn, Wonder Gadot took off and put away the field in fine style, crossing the wire first by 6 lengths in a final time of 1:44.14 for the 1 1/16-mile race over the Tapeta all-weather course. “She’s beautiful, she’s really nicely built,” said assistant trainer Kathryn Sullivan. “For a 2-year-old filly, she’s solid and has some substance. She’s just really impressive.” Shamrock Rose held second, finishing 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Ladies Night, with Avie’s Mineshaft completing the order of finish. Oldfashioned Style was scratched. After breaking her maiden, Wonder Gadot followed with a third-place effort next out in the Grade 1 Natalma, both of which were contested on the Woodbine turf. The switch to the all-weather surface seemed to do well for the Mark Casse trainee. “The two turf races taught her a lot how to relax because anytime you work on the ‘Poly’, we put horses in front about 5 to 15 lengths, and in two jumps, she’s past them,” Husbands said. “On the turf, she’s a more relaxed filly, but on the ‘Poly’, she’s the real deal.” Wonder Gadot returned $4.20 to win.
