No Mo Dough Erupts to Win $100,000 LARC Sir Barton

BALTIMORE, MD –Alex G. Campbell, Jr., Thoroughbreds’ homebred No Mo Dough came running fastest of all with an explosive burst down the stretch to win Saturday’s $100,000 Latin American Racing Channel Sir Barton by 2 3/4 lengths at Pimlico Race Course.

The 20th running of the Sir Barton, named for racing’s first Triple Crown champion in 1919, helped benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Making his stakes debut, No Mo Dough completed 1 1/16 miles over a good main track in 1:44.13 to give jockey Jose Ortiz his third stakes win of the Preakness weekend. He captured the Grade 3, $150,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff and the Grade 3, $150,000 Adena Springs Miss Preakness on Friday’s Black-Eyed Susan Day program.

“He broke great today,” said Ortiz. “The last couple times, he broke kind of slow. He put me in a good position. He was relaxed where he was, and when I asked him to run at the 3/8 pole, I felt like I had plenty of horse. He’s still a little green, but he’s a nice horse.”

It was the first Sir Barton victory for Fair Hill Training Center-based conditioner Graham Motion, winner of Friday’s Hilltop Stakes with Happy Mesa.

“I really liked this horse today,” Motion said. “Jose rides him with such confidence. He showed a lot of ability as a baby, and then we gave him the time. Today, he galloped really strongly. I think he won kinda easily. He’s a very nice colt.”

Ortiz and No Mo Dough had only one horse beat as the Sir Barton’s nine-horse field approached the far turn but had a clear run on the far outside to pick off rivals after straightening for home, catching front-running Time to Travel in the mid-stretch before drawing away.

Time to Travel hung on for second by a nose over True Timber. Even-money favorite Hedge Fund was fourth by another neck but was disqualified for interference with Society Beau in the stretch and placed sixth. Greek Prince, Watch Me Whip, and Resiliency completed the order of finish.

No Mo Dough returned $20, $8.20, and $5.40. Time to Travel brought back $6 and $4.20, while True Timber paid $5.20 to show.
