Three Stars of the Week
– 1st Star: Tom’s Tribute (KY) – Here is your first Grade 1 winner of the meet! It was also the first Grade 1 victory for Tom’s Tribute, and actually his first Graded stakes win at all. The horse kind of came alive in his last two races at Santa Anita, and really was never threatened in the Eddie Reed on Sunday. He’s found his home going a mile on the turf, and you can bet he’ll be pointed to similar races from here on out.
– 2nd Star: Enterprising (FL) – What a devastating stretch run this horse displayed on opening day in the Oceanside Stakes! After trailing the field for what seemed like forever, Enterprising rushed home in close to 11 seconds flat and was able to pull off a victory by the slimmest of margins. It was his second ungraded stakes victory, and you’d have to think he’ll face Graded stakes company at Del Mar before the meet is over.
– 3rd Star: Luminance (KY) – What a special filly this one might be! Luminance broke a track record going five furlongs on Sunday, breaking her maiden on debut. What’s even more impressive…she was slow to break, and was also SIX wide in the final turn! The Del Mar surface was playing extremely fast, but she still did some serious running considering the trip. The Del Mar Debutante will be the obvious goal now, and it’s hard to imagine that she won’t be the favorite in that race.
Flop of the Week
– Bollywood (KY) – Baffert gave us all kinds of hype on Luminance and it paid off, but Bollywood didn’t live up to his hype as he was well beaten finisher on debut. There is no reason to panic yet…the Del Mar surface doesn’t suit many horses. However, his complete non-effort was a surprise. Wouldn’t take him at short price next time out…
