ARCADIA, CA – Trainer Doug O’Neill’s Hot Rod Charlie, game runner-up to favored Essential Quality in the Belmont Stakes (G1) last Saturday, enjoyed his first day back on the track this morning at his home base of Santa Anita.
âHe jogged a mile and 1/2 and looked fantastic,â OâNeill said. âHe was happy and full of energy.â
The hard-hitting son of Oxbow arrived Wednesday night from the East Coast; now, Team OâNeill is pondering the future.
âDeciding on his next race is a group effort,â OâNeill said. âNo one wants to say much right now . . . itâs the old clichĂ©, âWeâll see where Charlie takes us,â and we really canât know that until we see how he is on the track, eating, and all that stuff, so in a couple weeks, weâll have a better idea.
âThe Pacific Classic at Del Mar is a possibility (August 21), the Haskell at Monmouth is possible (July 17), as is the Pennsylvania Derby (September 25 at Parx),” all of which are Grade 1 dirt routes. “There are tons of possibilities and options.â
