As we are now just a week away from the Kentucky Derby (G1) draw, everyone is in full handicapping mode trying to predict one of the seemingly most wide-open Derbies in recent history. We’ve all seen the preps. And, if you’re like us, you’ve studied every single horse from every single prep, trying to determine the most impressive performance leading up to the first Saturday in May. So that leads us to this. Here’s what I believe to be the most productive Kentucky Derby prep races leading up to the big day as well as the contenders that came out of each of those races.
1. Arkansas Derby
Omaha Beach (1st), Improbable (2nd), Country House (3rd), Long Range Toddy (6th)
2. Santa Anita Derby
Roadster (1st), Game Winner (2nd)
3. Wood Memorial
Tacitus (1st), Tax (2nd), Haikal (3rd)
4. Blue Grass Stakes
Vekoma (1st), Win Win Win (2nd)
5. Florida Derby
