Top 100 Horses to Watch for in 2016

The Breeders’ Cup has ended which means its time to focus on 2016. The dawn of a new year in horse racing always starts with the Kentucky Derby trail, and this year will be no different. However, the older male and female division could be extremely strong this season.

With super stars Shared Belief and California Chrome on target to return in 2016 the older males look strong. Add in newly 4 year olds in 2016 Dortmund, Keen Ice, and Frosted and the division is packed with talent. On the older female side of things Beholder will be returning which is huge, as well as 2014 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Untapable. Stellar Wind, Curlina, and I’m a Chatterbox are 3 year olds turning 4 in this division who could make a huge impact.

With that being said, when January rolls around the newly turned 3 year olds will take center stage. The Kentucky Derby trail at this time is very cloudy…Nyquist and Swipe look to be much the best in the male division, but past that there are several question marks. At this point I would even venture to say we haven’t even SEEN the winner of the 2016 Kentucky Derby just yet if the winner is indeed a colt. However, the colts may not be on the same level as a filly who looks to be extra special: Songbird. The Songbird hype has just begun, and will continue to swell as long as she can remain healthy. With the recent infusion of amazing fillies crossing over to take on and beat the boys, its not a stretch to think Songbird could be Kentucky Derby bound.
