Tiz the Law Draws Post 8, Named 6/5 Favorite for Belmont Stakes

ELMONT, NY – Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law drew post 8 and was instilled as the 6/5 favorite in the field of 10 that will enter the gates for Saturday’s $1 million Belmont Stakes (G1).

Due to the pandemic, the Belmont Stakes will be the first leg of the 2020 Triple Crown and will be run at 1 1/8 miles (rather than 1 1/2).

Tiz the Law has sat on or near the top of nearly every pundit’s Kentucky Derby (G1) contenders list all season, due in part to his dominating efforts in multiple graded stakes. The 3-year-old Constitution colt won two straight to start his career, including the Champagne Stakes (G1) over the local course, before finishing third as the favorite in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2).

Jockey Manny Franco learned in defeat to keep the long-striding Tiz the Law in a clear running position, which he demonstrated in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) to start 2020. The Barclay Tagg trainee followed that up with a scintillating score in the Florida Derby (G1) and has impressed with his works leading up to the Belmont.

Todd Pletcher will saddle two – Dr Post and Farmington Road – in an attempt to win his fourth edition of the Belmont Stakes. The seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer first won “The Test of the Champion” in 2007 with the filly Rags to Riches, then repeated in 2013 with Palace Malice and in 2017 with Tapwrit.

Dr Post debuted over this course last July 4, running fourth behind the eventual Saratoga Special Stakes winner Green Light Go. Off until March 29, he broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park before winning the inaugural Unbridled Stakes one month later. Irad Ortiz, Jr., will be back aboard for the second straight time.

Farmington Road is the more seasoned of the two stablemates, having faced stakes company in his past three starts. He was a late-running second in the Oaklawn Stakes in between fourth-place efforts in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) and the Arkansas Derby (G1). Javier Castellano has the mount.
