Tiz Breathtaking Wins at Wire in G3 Mazarine

TORONTO, ON – Windhaven Farms’ Tiz Breathtaking ran wide in the far turn and even wider down the stretch but was able to get up just in time to win Saturday’s Grade 3, $125,000 Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine.

Breaking from the far outside post under Eurico Da Silva as the even-money favorite, Tiz Breathtaking settled off the pace early while Jolie Bay posted opening fractions of :24.82, :50.23, and 1:14.82. Making a three-wide run in the far turn, Tiz Breathtaking began picking off her foes before hitting the stretch and running five-wide down the lane. Under a vigorous ride from da Silva, Tiz Breathtaking powered past Carnival Colors and Comic Kitten in the shadow of the wire to win by a head and a nose. The Michael Doyle trainee’s final time was 1:45.28 for the 8 1/2-furlong event over the fast all weather track.

“When they broke there, it looked like we were going to have a nice little pace, but then everybody slowed down and the pace was very, very slow,” Da Silva said. “I had no choice anymore. I was in that position and I said, ‘I’m going to wait here.’ I have a lot of faith in this filly because when you move, she sprints, she sprints home. When I moved in the turn, she just broke from there.”

More than 2 lengths behind the top trio, Lady Azalea necked out fourth over a weakened Jolie Bay. Crumlin Time and Not Orbinary completed the order of finish after neither factored much into the race.

Tiz Breathtaking’s win was her third in four starts, all at Woodbine. The juvenile daughter of Tiznow increased her career earnings to $179,530.

“She had a lot of work to do, and then she was very wide because it was the only place to go,” Doyle said. “There was no point going up the inside. I was certainly worried – I wasn’t sure if she got there or not – but I knew she’d come running and I knew the trip wouldn’t be a problem.”

Doyle wouldn’t commit to a potential Breeders’ Cup start, but hinted that he could be swayed in the coming days.

“We might maybe talk about the Breeders’ Cup for two minutes, just in case,” he said. “She got a few points, just in case it made any sense. It probably doesn’t, but it may do some other time.”

Tiz Breathtaking returned $4.10 to win, $2.60 to place, and $2.20 to show. Carnival Colors brought back $3.20 to place and $2.50 to show, while Comic Kitten paid $2.90 to show.
