The Unibet Middle Distance Veterans’ Chase Series: Old Dogs, Same Big Tricks

In most sports, turning ten means you’re just getting started. In horse racing, it usually means your best days are behind you. But not for the warriors of the Unibet Middle Distance Veterans’ Chase Series, a competition that gives older chasers a fresh stage to shine — and it’s quickly becoming a fan favorite.

Now in its second full season, the 2024/25 edition brings back all the grit, guts, and glory that made the inaugural series special. Backed by Unibet Horse Racing, this unique event series has become a fan favorite for celebrating the stamina and tenacity of older chasers. It’s a celebration of endurance, heart, and some old-school racing class — tailor-made for National Hunt veterans aged ten and up who still have something to prove.

What Is the Veterans’ Chase Series?

The concept is simple but brilliant. The series is open exclusively to chasers aged ten or older, horses who may find winning chances harder to come by in open competition. All races are run over of 2½ miles, which strikes the perfect balance — a stamina test without going overboard.

Eight qualifying races across major UK racecourses, lead up to a £100,000 final at Haydock Park on Saturday, April 19, 2025. Horses only need to finish in the top eight of any qualifier to earn a spot in the final, broadcast live on ITV. That means every leg counts, but even consistent performers who don’t win can still make it to the big stage.

Season Highlights So Far

The current season kicked off in style on October 27, 2024, at Wincanton, where Numitor — already a series legend — opened his campaign with a victory. On November 19 at Carlisle, Flic Ou Voyou won as the 11/8 favorite, showing his class. Then, on December 13 at Cheltenham, Numitor returned to the spotlight by winning again at juicy odds of 10/1.

The January 4 fixture at Wincanton was unfortunately abandoned due to poor weather, but the action resumed soon after. The Flier Begley took the Market Rasen leg on January 17 at 17/2, while Le Milos, another strong veteran, delivered a dominant win at Warwick on February 8. At Haydock on February 15, it was Dubai Days who sprung a surprise, striking at odds of 16/1. The most recent race, on March 18 at Exeter, saw The Widdow Maker score at 15/8.

These results have built a compelling narrative heading into the final — and one name continues to stand out.

Numitor: Still the One to Beat

If there’s a face of this series, it’s Numitor. Trained by Heather Main and ridden by Sean Bowen, the seasoned chaser is aiming to defend the title he won in the 2023/24 final — and so far, he’s doing a great job.

With two wins under his belt this season, Numitor has proven he still has the drive, the speed, and the will to win. He handles different tracks, adapts to varying conditions, and carries himself like a horse that knows how to do the job.

If he lines up on April 19 in good form, few would bet against him doing the double.

Haydock Finale: What’s at Stake?

The series concludes at Haydock Park, a track known for its challenging fences and enthusiastic crowds. The final also coincides with the Easter Family Fun Day, which means a packed house and a festival-like atmosphere.

With £100,000 on the line, there’s plenty to race for — and more than just money. For these horses, it’s about legacy, about proving that age is no barrier when heart and grit are in full supply.

This year’s final promises a fascinating mix of returning stars and up-and-coming veterans who’ve found form just in time. It’s shaping up to be one of the spring’s standout races.

Countdown to the Final

All roads now lead to April 19, where Haydock will host the ultimate showdown for these veterans of the turf. Will Numitor cement his place in series history? Could a dark horse like Dubai Days or The Flier Begley steal the glory? Or will a new hero emerge to shake things up?

One thing’s for sure — these older chasers have plenty left to give. And come final day, they’ll be running like it’s their first season.
