The Mary Rose Wins Downthedustyroad

HOT SPRINGS, AR – Shortleaf Stable homebred The Mary Rose was a grinding 1/2-length winner against her fellow Arkansas-bred fillies and mares in Sunday’s sloppy (sealed) edition of the $150,000 Downthedustyroad Breeders’ Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Martin Garcia was aboard the Brad Cox trainee, a 4-year-old Macho Uno filly who was the 7/2 second choice on the morning line.

“She’s a solid Arkansas-bred,” Cox said. “Similar trip to her last race. Outside looked like where you needed to be. Martin did a good job putting her in position and got the job done.”

Matapan, Miss Antioch, the even-money favorite and defending champion Bye Bye J, and Sekani filled out the top five. Oochie, Dutch Treat, Tiger Bait, Tiddly, Proud Victoria, and Savedbyanangel completed the order of finish. My Grace was scratched.

The Mary Rose returned $9 to win, $5.40 to place, and $4 to show. Matapan brought back $9.40 to place and $6 to show. Miss Antioch paid $8 to show.
