Free Pick: West Virginia at Oklahoma 9/25/21

West Virginia is coming off a victory over 15th ranked Virginia Tech last Saturday in Morgantown. They were balanced on offense and had their most impressive game to date. They will be rolling into Norman with a lot of momentum for this one. Meanwhile, the Sooners beat Nebraska 23-16, but the win left a lot to be desired for most Sooner fans. There are some issues with the vaunted Oklahoma offense and they will have to get some things worked out if they want to keep winning.

Scouting West Virginia: The Mountaineers are getting solid play out of quarterback, Jarret Doege. He was solid last week against the Hokies throwing for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns and is able to make a play when needed. They have a very good running back in senior, Leddie Brown who had 19 carries for 161 yards against a very good Va.Tech defense. They are a ball-control offense and will try and keep the ball in their possession and away from the Sooners. On defense, safeties, Sean Mahone, Alonzo Addae, and Scottie Young have combined for 50 tackles and linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo has 23 of his own. They have played well against two Division 1 teams that, on paper, are not as good as Oklahoma.

Scouting Oklahoma: The Sooners have been disappointing while starting off 3-0. They have had to go down to the wire against Tulane and Nebraska, two teams who have a combined 3-4 record and are average at best. Quarterback, Spencer Rattler has good enough stats but he has been erratic with his accuracy and his decision-making has come under some criticism. He has to play better for OU to be what they think are. Kennedy Brooks and Eric Gray have been solid running the ball and seem to be the strength of the offense. The offensive line has made some strides but are not what Oklahoma fans are used to seeing. Defensively, Oklahoma is strong upfront with Isaiah Thomas and Nick Bonitto causing havoc to opposing offenses. D.J. Graham and Pat Fields have been solid in the secondary, but they need some improved play from their linebackers.

It would appear that West Virginia will try to establish the run using Leddie Brown. If they can have some success, that will open up the passing game and they need to be able to hit some long plays. Oklahoma has been pretty good in stopping the run from the backs but have struggled with the quarterback run. The OU offense is looking for some downfield passing plays as that has been lacking in their offense. So far, no receiver has shown the ability to get deep and Rattler has been inaccurate with the deep ball. The Sooners are a 16.5 point favorite.
