The 2026 Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) is shaping up to be one of the most important races of the year.
With a purse increase to $2 million and a Breeders’ Cup Classic berth on the line, Churchill Downs will host a showdown featuring four of the most accomplished dirt horses currently in training: reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abarrio, and Grade 1 winner Baeza.
For racing fans, this is the type of race we rarely get outside of the Breeders’ Cup.
Sovereignty Returns to Churchill Downs

The Godolphin homebred returns beneath the Twin Spires for the first time since his Kentucky Derby victory and enters the Stephen Foster as the reigning Horse of the Year. Following his Derby triumph, the Bill Mott trainee added victories in the Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy Stakes, and Travers Stakes to cement his championship campaign.
Now four years old, Sovereignty has made just one start this season, finishing second to White Abarrio in the Oaklawn Handicap. That race served as a solid prep, and he’ll look to reestablish himself atop the older horse division from Post 3 under Junior Alvarado.
A victory here would further strengthen his case as the nation’s top dirt horse.
Magnitude Looks to Extend Winning Streak

If any horse enters the Stephen Foster with momentum, it’s Magnitude.
The Steve Asmussen trainee has rattled off three consecutive victories, culminating with a breakthrough performance in the Dubai World Cup (G1) this spring. Prior to that, he captured both the Clark Stakes (G2) and Razorback Handicap (G3), proving himself against elite competition.
The son of Not This Time has steadily developed into one of the most dangerous older horses in training and now gets a chance to validate his international success against the deepest field he’s faced all season.
Jose Ortiz will be aboard from Post 5.

White Abarrio Continues His Remarkable Career

At seven years old, White Abarrio continues to defy age.
Already a winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Pegasus World Cup (G1), the veteran enters the Stephen Foster off a convincing victory in the Oaklawn Handicap where he defeated Sovereignty by two lengths.
That effort reminded everyone that White Abarrio remains among the sport’s elite older runners. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., the son of Race Day has consistently shown he can compete with anyone when at his best.
The Stephen Foster gives him another opportunity to prove that experience still matters against a new generation of stars.
Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride from Post 2.
Baeza Could Be the Forgotten Horse

While much of the attention centers on the division’s biggest names, Baeza may offer plenty of value.
The Pennsylvania Derby (G1) winner has already shown he belongs with the best of his generation and notably defeated Magnitude in that race by more than two lengths. After beginning his career under the late John Shirreffs, Baeza recently joined Bill Mott’s barn and nearly won the Alysheba Stakes in his first start for his new trainer despite encountering traffic trouble.
With Flavien Prat taking the call from Post 4, Baeza enters the Stephen Foster as a legitimate threat to upset the more accomplished favorites.
Deep Supporting Cast Adds Intrigue
The field doesn’t stop with the Big Four.
Saffie Joseph Jr. also sends out Hollywood Gold Cup (G2) winner Forged Steel and Pimlico Special (G#) winner Navajo Warrior, while Mike Maker’s hard-knocking Willy D’s rounds out the seven-horse field.
Still, the story of this year’s Stephen Foster revolves around Sovereignty, Magnitude, White Abarrio, and Baeza.
All four have Grade 1 credentials. All four have championship aspirations. And with a “Win and You’re In” berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic awaiting the winner, Saturday’s result could go a long way toward shaping the remainder of the 2026 racing season.
