Something Awesome Surprises in the G2 Charles Town Classic

2018 Kentucky Oaks/Kentucky Derby Wagering Guide

The race began with the 6-5 favorite Diversify taking the early lead followed by Afleet Willy sitting just off the pace behind him. Diversify controlled the pace of the race, setting fractions of :24.34, :48.48, and 1:13.16. With Diversify in front, the rest of the field was happy to sit back and wait to make their move. Afleet Willy was the first to move on Diversify’s lead and passed him easily. Something Awesome followed quickly behind with a move of his own to challenge Afleet Willy while Diversify tired and dropped back to the rear. Into the stretch, War Story joined Afleet Willy and Something Awesome and the three dueled it out to the wire. It looked as though Afleet Willy would hold off to win, however, the wire did not come fast enough for Afleet Willy who couldn’t keep up with the other two. Something Awesome proved to be best getting his nose down first ahead of War Story. A late run by Fear the Cowboy was enough to finish third ahead of Afleet Willy.

Something Awesome returned $20.60 to win, $6.00 to place, and $5.80 to show. War Story brought back $2.80 to place and $2.40 to show, while Fear the Cowboy paid $4.20 to show.
