Three Stars of the Week
– 1st Star: Stopchargingmaria (KY) – A Repole horse coming alive in New York…stop me if you’ve seen this show before! FINALLY a 3 year old filly not named Untapable stepped up and ran a nice race. Did she beat much? NO! However, she did it the right way. She was on even terms with the front runners at the top of the stretch, and simply destroyed them late, pulling away to win by a large margin. The Alabama will be next for Stopchargingmaria, and she should be a big favorite in that race.
– 2nd Star: Somali Lemonade (KY) – She became the first Grade 1 winner of the meet, and also captured the first Grade 1 win of her career on Saturday as an upset winner of the Diana Stakes. Somali Lemonade had ran respectable races, but only had Grade 3 wins on her resume despite solid efforts in other tries. Jockey Luis Saez was able to stalk what was a slow pace, and Somali Lemonade simply had more run than the others down the stretch. You can bet we’ll see her again before the meet is over.
– 3rd Star: Big Trouble (KY) – All that talk about his debut winning beyer being low made very little difference as Big Trouble nosed out Mr. Z in the Sanford on Saturday. It proves that beyers mean very little when it comes to two year olds (or any other time for that matter) as these horses can improve at any time. You would think Big Trouble would now be pointing towards the Hopeful Stakes on closing weekend, and you would also think added distance might suit the horse ok.
Flop of the Week
– Alterite (FR) – All kinds of class…all kinds of talent…but it was obvious the long layoff really hurt her in the Diana Stakes last Saturday. Alterite was rank right from the start, and really never settled down the entire race. She was within striking distance after all her troubles, but came up totally empty down the stretch. Definitely one that will improve next time out.
