Revisiting our Top 5 Kentucky Derby Sleepers

Revisiting our Top 5 Kentucky Derby Sleepers

Almost a month ago we wrote an article listing our Top 5 Kentucky Derby Sleepers.  Now that all the dust has settled and all the preps have been ran lets see how we did:

1. Matt King Coal

Didn’t strike out with this one, but not quite a home run either.  He set the pace in a sloppy edition of the Wood Memorial, and faded to finish fourth.  In terms of the Kentucky Derby he won’t make an impact, but his race was good enough to think he could possibly run in either the Preakness or Belmont Stakes.  We’ll stay tuned in to what his plans may end up being.

2. Creator

Home run!!  Creator captured the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, and is now one of the top contenders to win the Kentucky Derby.  Rallying from dead last in the Arkansas Derby things didn’t look good at first until he came running at the top of the stretch to pick up the win.  He also showed a willingness to split horses, and run through traffic which will be important on the first Saturday in May.  Could be getting good at the right time.

3. American Pioneer

STRIKE OUT!  American Pioneer was an incredible maiden winner at Oaklawn Park, and the horse he beat came back to finish sixth in the Bluegrass Stakes which we thought was a good time.  Instead, it all went terribly wrong in the Arkansas Derby.  He pressed the pace and ended up finishing a well beaten ninth.  Hard to imagine he’ll make any appearances in Triple Crown races after that performance.

4. Hoffenheim

We’ll give ourselves on imcomplete on this one as Hoffenheim hasn’t entered a race since breaking his maiden.  He had a workout on March 24th, but has not been heard from since then.  Obviously something has went wrong with him so we’ll have to see where and when he pops up next.

5. Unbridled Outlaw

Another strike out for us as Unbridled Outlaw was even worse than American Pioneer in the Arkansas Derby as he finished eleventh out of twelve.  Looks as though this horse will need a serious class drop for his next race, and will be very far away from any Triple Crown race.
