Racing Dudes Three Stars Of The Week: Upsets Aplenty, Derby Prospect Emerges

With upsets aplenty in the graded stakes action at Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Los Alamitos, see who made our latest Three Stars of the Week!

1. Officiating

The “other” Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee Officiating defeated the favorite Endorsed, the highly-hyped Dennis’ Moment, and his stablemate Wind of Change in Saturday’s Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

2. Last Samurai

Last Samurai won Saturday’s inaugural running of the Poinsettia Stakes at Oaklawn Park, a 1 1/16-mile route restricted to 3-year-olds. He defeated a talented cast including runner-up Grade 1 winner Super Stock and pace-setter Flash of Mischief, who tired to third late.

3. Slow Down Andy

It was by no means splashy, but this Doug O’Neill-trained son of 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) champion Nyquist upset Messier Saturday and stopped trainer Bob Baffert’s record streak of wins in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2). Slow Down Andy earned 10 Kentucky Derby points and will likely point to the Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita Park in February.
