Racing Dudes Three Stars of the Week: Fire Away Takes Top Spot

It was another slow week as far as stakes races were concerned, but we still should recognize the great performances of the weekend. Racing will heat back up this Thanksgiving weekend, but for now, let’s take a look at our Three Stars from last week:

1. Fire Away

Fire Away picked up the first stakes victory of his career in Saturday’s $150,000 Artie Schiller by 1 length over Monster Bea. While Fire Away deserves the majority of the credit, the ride by jockey John Velazquez was masterful. He saved all the ground towards the inside and took him right up a wide-open rail to pick up the victory. This type of win opens up a lot of options for Fire Away, who will most likely head south to Gulfstream Park for the winter months. Gulfstream will offer a variety of turf stakes for him to tackle.

2. Dream Tree

She didn’t win by much, but she got the job done! Dream Tree is now a perfect two-for-two after just holding off Midnight Bisou to win the $100,000 Desi Arnaz on Saturday at Del Mar. The funny thing is that the race was pretty much a carbon copy of the first meeting between these two, a maiden special weight at Santa Anita where Dream Tree narrowly won as well. Judging by their races, Dream Tree will probably stick to sprints, while Midnight Bisou will probably stretch out in distance for her next start.

3. Be Vewy Vewy Quiet

He has vewy vewy quietly had a nice 2-year-old season up at Woodbine. On Saturday, he showed great determination to hold off the late-running Silent Sting to take home the $125,000 Frost King. The win was his third in five starts and his second stakes win of the meet. The son of Silent Name has now amassed nearly $200,000 in earnings and seems perfectly suited for sprint races on the synthetic surface.
